It’s Thursday, so you know that means it’s time to throw it back and shed a little light on a classic. Let’s get to it. The year was 1999 when DJ DMD of Port Author, Texas (same place the legendary UGK is from) hooked up with Lil Keke and Fat Pat (R.I.P.) to drop “25 Lighters.” The track is taken from his Twenty-Two: P.A. World Wide album. Since the track has dropped, there have been a few tracks to sample/mention the hit, plus remixes from ZZ Top and Swishahouse.
Now what does having “25 lighters on my dresser” actually mean? If you know what a “crackhead lighter” is… in Houston they used to take those, clean them out, fill them with crack/cocaine, and sell them. So, asking for a lighter back then meant something completely different.
Anyway, Check out the track below.
“I got 25 lighters on my dresser, yessir. I gots to get paiiiiiid.”
I’ve noticed that when I mention this record, there aren’t too many people who know it. It’s a Texas classic. Kendrick didn’t come up with that line. LOL Kbye.
