Garrett! (formerly G. Dot). Originally from London, now in Atlanta. Christian artist. Graphic Designer. Videographer. He’s been rapping since he was 11, but didn’t start making projects until he was in the 11th grade. I’ll start this article by saying that I was at the studio a couple of weeks ago and Plewto Smith said to me, “Oh you know G. Dot? That’s a Southside legend!” With that being said, check out my interview with Garrett! below. We talked his latest project, Samples of the Truth, why he changed his name, his online series “Young & Christian,” and we’ll even be premiering a new record from him!
From G. Dot to Garrett!, why the name change?
“Honestly, I change my name every time I change the feel or direction of my music. I’ve went from “London” to “that young’ named London” to “Yung Lo” to “Yung Lo Da Martian” to “GdotBell” to now just “Garrett!” The punctuation at the end of my name is very important as well. I won’t go into that though.”
What made you decide to make the transition to a Christian artist?
“Well I’ve “quit” making music like 70,000 times because I felt like I wasn’t supposed to be doing it. I felt as if all of the effort that I put into making things was pointless and a waste of time. Looking back, it low-key was. After my project “ThatOneSong” I was really about to be done, but a few months or so later I realized that God gave me the talent for a reason. That reason is to give Him glory.”
Garrett! released his first project as a Christian artist, Samples of the Truth, on October 17, 2015. All of the artwork, videos, promotion was done by Garrett himself. The entire project was produced by TVPES. Stream below.
What’s your favorite song on Samples of the Truth and why?
“It’s definitely a tie between “Hello, Good Morning” and “Proud of Me.” Both of those songs were made around the same time so they both have the same emotion I guess you could say. I honestly like all of the songs on the project though, they all came from a real place.”
All of the tracks are produced by TVPES. Would you say he captures your sound the best?
“Yes… well it depends on how I’m feeling. It was only right to hop on TVPES instrumentals for this project though. He uses samples a lot and his instrumentals are usually about a minute and some change long. That could also be considered a “sample.”
What was the inspiration behind the “Something Like Water” video? Did you shoot and edit it yourself?
“Before Samples of the Truth was even created I came up with this idea to make a gospel mixtape over old school beats. It was going to be called “All That and a Bag of Chips.” That was actually going to be my first project as a Christian artist. However, after making “Hello, Good Morning” I realized that my first project shouldn’t just be a regular ol mixtape. Especially if it was going to be about/for God. So I put ATAABOC on hold for a minute to finish samples. I had already recorded “Something Like Water” though so I figured I would shoot a video for it just for fun. I shot and edited it myself. It has so many flaws in it, ha. I’m surprised so many people liked it.”

What’s next for Garrett!? Any upcoming releases that we should be on the look out for?
“Well the plan is to create a solid follow up project to Samples at some point. In the meantime I’m going to release fun simple videos and singles. I don’t have any specific dates or anything yet.”
What’s the one thing you want listeners to take away from your music?
“Being Christian is more than just going to church every Sunday and Wednesday. It’s a real relationship with God. In this relationship you should do whatever it takes to make sure that God is happy — Just like you would want to do with your significant other in any healthy worldly relationship. My music explains my relationship with God. Hopefully as I express my true feelings and take on this relationship that I have with Him, I can bring people closer to Him while also giving Him all the glory and Honor in the process.”
Before you go, hip us to your YouTube series, “Young & Christian.” Is there anything you want new viewers out there to know before watching?
“Ah! Thanks for asking! Young & Christian is a docu-series that documents the lives of Young Christians around the world. In the series you get a first hand look into what it’s like to be a Christian in the younger years of life — but it’s not what you think — it’s not as easy as it seems or as fun as it looks. There are real struggles that we face as the younger generation of the faith — be that temptations, rejection, doubt, fear of not fitting in etc. However, we all have the same mission and that is to make it to Heaven one day and be with Jesus Christ. I created this show for three reasons: One, so that people could have an outlet to share their downfall and triumph stories with a wider variety of people. This way others can see that they are not alone in this world. There are others going through the same exact thing. Maybe seeing how someone else conquered it will give another the strength to overcome it as well. Two, to show people what it’s REALLY like being a Christian. A lot of people make assumptions based off of what they hear or off of one particular person. This show gives a wider perspective so you can see the bigger picture. It’s all real. Non Scripted. Three, to help people, and hopefully get them to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. It’s a fun show, and I’m currently looking for cast members to be in the second season. The first season was kind of getting my feet wet so to speak, but I’m trying to change the game with season two.”
